1. Explain the example in writing by filling out the graphic organizer provided.
2. Be able to demonstrate the example through either a drawing, model, video, or simply by acting it out. If you find an application of your example in a video online, you may use that as well. (If you would like to display your example in another way not listed here, submit your request for my approval.)

- Describe your example in words.
- Show how your example works.
- Explain how your example is an application of Newton’s First Law.
Be ready to answer questions about your example from classmates and teachers.
- The written portion of this assessment will be completed on the graphic organizer provided in the word document attached below. You will hand this paper in on ONE WEEK BEFORE the due date. You will then have a student/teacher conference to make corrections or adjustments if necessary.
- On the due date, you will come to class prepared to display your example with whatever materials are necessary to do so.
- YOU are responsible for bringing these to class and setting up. If you need the use of the classroom computer and/or SMART board, please let me know ahead of time so arrangements can be made.
List of Examples:
- A football is still until a player throws it.
- A soccer ball travels at a constant speed down the field until it hits a goal post and stops.
- A bowling ball hits the pins, sending them flying.
- A swing is still until the wind blows, making the swing sway back and forth.
- A car travels down the road at 20 mph until force is applied to the brakes, causing the car to stop.
- When a car is moving and suddenly stops, the passengers will move forward.
- When a coffee mug is left on top of the car and then the driver speeds away, the cup will want to stay at rest, so it will slide off the back of the car.
- When a plan takes off, passengers feel “pushed” back into their seats because they will be inclined to stay at rest though the plane is moving.
- Marbles on the floor are at rest until a child comes by, kicking them, sending them scattering in different directions.
