Directions:
After reading about and watching video clips displaying examples of the six simple machines, you will now recreate one that solves a common problem you or someone your age may have. Choose a problem from the list below that can be solved by using a simple machine. You will then recreate this machine by using a drawing, diagram, or model to show how it solves your proposed problem.
Example: Your dad needs to put his lawn mower in the back of his pickup truck. It is too heavy to be lifted. He can use an inclined plane to help move the lawnmower from the ground up into the truck bed. By using a ramp made of wood, your dad can push the lawn mower up the wooden ramp and into the truck bed quite easily.

2. Be able to demonstrate how your problem will be solved by using the simple machine chosen through either a drawing, diagram, or model. (If you would like to display your problem scenario/simple machine solution in another way not listed here, submit your request for my approval.)
3. Prepare to present this example to classmates in a clear, organized way. You will have to:
1. Explain the problem you chose and the simple machine that will help you solve this problem in the graphic organizer provided at the bottom of this page.
2. Be able to demonstrate how your problem will be solved by using the simple machine chosen through either a drawing, diagram, or model. (If you would like to display your problem scenario/simple machine solution in another way not listed here, submit your request for my approval.)
3. Prepare to present this example to classmates in a clear, organized way. You will have to:
- Describe your problem and simple machine solution in words.
- Show how your simple machine solves the problem you picked.
- Explain why you chose this particular simple machine to solve your problem.
Be ready to answer questions about your example from classmates and teachers.
- The written portion of this assessment will be completed on the graphic organizer provided in the word document attached below. You will hand this paper in ONE WEEK BEFORE the due date. You will then have a student/teacher conference to make changes or adjustments if necessary.
- On the due date, you will come to class prepared to display your example with whatever materials are necessary to do so.
YOU are responsible for bringing this project to class and setting up. Please let me know if you have any questions before beginning your project.
List of Example Choices:
1. You need to split large pieces of wood into smaller pieces for your campfire.
2. You cannot crack the nut you are about to eat because the shell it too hard.
3. You need to lift your bicycle into the trunk of your mom’s car, but it is too heavy.
4. You need to move bags of sand to fill your little sister’s sandbox across the yard, but they are too heavy to move by yourself.
5. You are helping your uncle build a tree house in your backyard. You need to lift the materials up into the tree, but they are too heavy.
6. You are helping your brother put a reflector on his new bike. You must find a way to attach the reflector to the back of the bicycle.
7. You want to open a can of soup for lunch, but it does not have a “pop-top”. You have to find an alternate way to open the can.
8. Your neighbor who is in a wheelchair needs to get in and out of the car, but her wheelchair is too heavy for anyone to lift into the vehicle.
9. You need to remove the snow from your driveway and sidewalk after a big snowstorm.
10. You are helping your mom wash the second floor windows of your house. You are on the ground and need to hoist the cleaning materials up to her because she is too high up for you to reach from the ground.
