Performance Task 2
Your Task
You will design and create a playground made up of equipment using the six simple machines discussed in chapter two. You will draw a plan and give a written explanation of what your equipment will look like and how it will function. You must have at least one example of each type of simple machine in your playground. In Part 2, you will transform your plan into working parts of equipment from the list of approved building materials previously distributed in class. Written work will also be completed on the materials previously distributed in class and graded on the rubric attached. You will present your playground to your classmates and fourth grade teachers upon completion.

Steps to Follow
In order to plan and create your playground, you will need to:
1. Draw a plan for your playground and how it will operate.
2. Write an explanation for your drawing: Identify each piece of equipment as a simple machine and explain how each functions.
3. Create your model playground to include working parts of equipment.

Directions for Beginning
You will now design and draw a plan of what your playground will look like and how each piece of equipment will function. You may use software programs such as Kid Pix or Appleworks, or you may draw your plan by hand using graph paper. In your plan, draw each piece of equipment to scale in proportion to the other pieces. You may select a theme for your playground if you wish or design it in a way that reflects your personality.

You will also provide a written explanation of your plan. In your description include the following:
- Explain how each piece of equipment is an example of a simple machine
- Explain how each piece functions.
- Explain how force and work impact each piece of playground equipment.
A graphic organizer has been provided to help you organize your thoughts. You will want to refer to these notes while composing your written explanation, but the notes made on the graphic organizer will not be scored.

Part 2
Please keep in mind the following when beginning Part Two of your performance task:
Please keep in mind the following when beginning Part Two of your performance task:
- The playground must fit on your desk.
- All working parts must be labeled.
- You must transform all simple machines into working parts of equipment.
You will now build your playground model. From your plan, decide what materials you will use to create your model. Please see the list of approved materials previously distributed in class when making your decision. Build your model on a base of solid wood, cardboard or foam so that it is protected. Label each working part/identify each simple machine on the playground.
When you present your playground, you must be able to do the following:
- Name and explain how each simple machine is used
- Explain how force and work impact each piece of playground equipment
- Explain and show how all of the equipment moves and functions.
