Performance Task 1
You will read an article and watch a video about the physics (types of force and motion) involved in the game of baseball. Then you will answer three questions about what you have learned. In Part 2, you will write an article that explains how the plays in baseball are related to different aspects of force and motion (physics). You will complete your written work on the materials previously distributed in class and be graded on the rubric attached.
Steps to Follow
In order to plan and write your article, you will need to:
1. Examine two sources.
2. Make notes about the information from the sources. (See graphic organizer below.)
3. Answer three questions about the sources.

Directions for Beginning
You will now examine two sources: an article entitled "Baseball: From Pitch to Hits" and a video, “The Physics of Baseball”. Take notes on both sources. You may use the graphic organizer provided below to organize your notes if you like. You will want to refer to your notes while composing your answers, but your notes will not be scored. You can re-read the article and watch the video as often as you like. Also, your answers will help you think about the research sources you have read and viewed, which should help you write your explanatory article.

Answer the following questions on the paper provided to you in class.
1. How does Newton’s First Law apply to a pitch in baseball? What, if any, factors affect this? How is this different from a hit? Compare the two plays using details from the two sources.
2. What role do friction and gravity play in the way the ball travels? Explain your reasoning by using specific details and examples from both sources.
3. Explain the specific types of force and motion that go into throwing a pitch in baseball. Use specific information from the above sources when explaining your answer.

Part 2
Your class is preparing a museum display that will include photos of a variety of baseball plays and the physics associated with them. You have been asked to write an article for the museum display explaining about how the two are related.

In your article
Choose one play made in baseball from "Baseball: From Pitch to Hits" and one from the video "The Physics of Baseball”. In your article, identify your two plays, explain how each is example of either a force or Law of Motion discussed in this chapter, and explain how the two plays and their connections to physics are similar to or different from one another. Include details from your sources. Record you response on the materials previously distributed in class.

Remember to:
- Plan your article.
- Write your article.
- Revise and edit for a final draft.

Reminder: A well-written explanatory article:
- Has a clear main idea
- Is well-organized and stays on the topic
- Provides evidence from the sources to support your topic
- Uses clear language that suits your purpose
- Follows rules of writing (spelling, punctuation, and grammar)
